3550 – Classic Canes ash thumbstick
The ash thumbstick is an unusual long stick that is much sought after in the countryside. Produced using the coppicing method, these sticks are formed from the shoot that grows when the upper part of a young ash tree is removed. Occasionally, these shoots fork to produce the distinctive thumbstick shape; the stick should be grasped around the neck, with the user's thumb resting in the 'V' formed by the shoots. They are grown in the Somerset woodland of the manufacturer, Classic Canes. Height between 122 - 135cm (48-53"). Fitted with a 'Combi-spike' ferrule: a rubber ferrule fitted over a spiked one so that the stick may be used on hard and soft ground.

A traditional country stick, originally used by shepherds to catch members of their flock of sheep. Today their striking shape makes them a popular present; the ideal accessory for a smart country ensemble. Ash wood is an attractive silvery-green colour as well as being very strong; it has been used to make walking sticks for centuries. It is fitted with a 'Combi-spike' ferrule: a rubber ferrule fitted over a metal one so that the stick may be used on both hard and soft ground. Height 135cm (53").

1208 – Classic Canes crosshead ash walking stick
A very traditional and interesting walking stick that is also a great talking point. The method of growing them is unusual: the tiny ash sapling is uprooted when only a few inches high and replanted on its side, with soil ridged over it. To survive, the sapling sends up a shoot, which gradually grows in diameter until it is big enough to form the shaft of the walking stick. The plant is then uprooted again, and the root system is fashioned into the handle. The right angle that has been produced makes a very strong stick, because it has grown in that shape rather than being steamed and bent into position. As each root system is different, each of these sticks is unique. Sometimes the root system produces lots of 'toes' in the handle, sometimes a smoother handle results. The shaft is fitted with a metal ferrule and has an approximate overall height of 92cm (36").
3579 – Classic Canes natural crosshead, hazel

The method of growing them is unusual: the tiny hazel sapling is uprooted when only a few inches high and replanted on its side, with soil ridged over it. 4614A - Classic Canes dark green trekking pole
Popular among hikers and ramblers, these lightweight, aluminium poles telescope into three sections. They are height adjustable between 80 and 156cm. The handle may be held in two different ways: held on the top in the manner of a walking stick, or grasped around the neck as with a hiking staff. The cord wristloop helps prevent accidental loss of the pole. The pole is fitted with a removable rubber ferrule over a metal spiked ferrule, so that the pole may be used on both hard and soft surfaces. Many walkers find that using one pole in each hand reduces the strain on the knee and ankle joints, especially if climbing over stiles or similar whilst carrying heavy rucksacks.
